Touching Our Community in Unexpected Ways

Sometimes, we meet people who leave a lasting impression on our hearts. Bev Werntz, a board member of Foothills Compassionate Care and a lifelong critical care and hospice nurse, shares the story of one such person—Mary Ann Smith.

Bev first met Mary Ann about two years ago at the Grass Valley Gift & Thrift Store, where Mary Ann was a dedicated volunteer. Every Saturday morning at 9 a.m., they would start their shift together, sorting through red totes filled with donated items and carefully arranging them on shelves. Mary Ann had an eye for detail, ensuring each piece fit seamlessly into the store’s display. She would often ask Bev, “If you have a minute, could you come look at where I placed this item to make sure it looks nice?” And every time, Bev would smile and assure her it was perfect.

For over two years, their Saturday mornings became a treasured routine. They greeted each other with a warm hug, shared stories about family, and laughed over the little treasures Mary Ann would purchase—gifts for her grandchildren or friends. Volunteering at the thrift store gave her a sense of purpose, filling the space left after years of working. “I just love being here,” she often said. “It makes me feel like I’m making a difference.”

The Gift & Thrift team was more than just a group of volunteers; they were a family. It was common to hear heartfelt goodbyes like, “I love you, see you next week,” as shifts came to an end.

Then, Mary Ann began mentioning back pain, apologizing when she needed to take a break. Bev didn’t think much of it—after all, aches and pains come with age. But one Saturday, Mary Ann’s daughter, Rhonda, came into the store with news that changed everything: Mary Ann had cancer.

Not long after her final shift, Mary Ann was admitted to the hospice program at Foothills Compassionate Care. In July, she passed away, leaving behind the warmth and kindness she shared with so many.

Mary Ann’s daughter Rhonda said, “Mom, in everything she did, it was with great thought and love. I feel Hospice care provided the same kind of love to Mom.”

Foothills Compassionate Care touches lives in more ways than we ever realize—not just through the gentle, loving care of our Hospice and Palliative Care programs but also through the quiet, heartfelt connections formed in our thrift stores. In unexpected places, in simple acts of service, the spirit of compassion continues to shine.
