A cherished Memorial Day tradition in Nevada County, the Butterfly Garden of Remembrance celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, marking a quarter-century of honoring lives, comforting hearts, and supporting compassionate care through the efforts of Friends of Hospice.
This touching tribute began in 2000, nestled in the peaceful grounds of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary. What started as a creative fundraiser quickly blossomed into a treasured community event. Inspired by past Friends of Hospice presidents—Beth Moorhead, Andrea Cox, and Cece Fowler—and made possible through the generosity of Hooper & Weaver owner Kay Baker, the Butterfly Garden took flight. With design support from Gloria Amaral, Pat Casterson, and Dale Peterson, a serene space was created where remembrance and healing could gently unfold.
For over a decade, Beth Moorhead served as the event’s original designer and guiding light. Her artistic vision and compassionate leadership have continued to inspire all who’ve followed in her footsteps. Local artisan Craig Reuter handcrafted and donated the striking trio of butterfly frames that welcome visitors each year, while B&C Home Center gifted the first 400 butterflies.
In 2009, Lawrence and Judy Faller added new wings to the garden’s story by donating 60 metal butterflies in gratitude for the care their parents received. A year later, they invited Nevada Union High School’s metal shop students to join the tradition, turning it into an annual school project that now results in dozens of beautifully painted butterflies, crafted with pride and purpose.
The Butterfly Garden is lovingly hosted each Memorial Day weekend by dedicated Friends of Hospice members and volunteers, who help guests locate their remembrance cards and reflect in this tranquil setting. Open to all, the garden offers a sacred space to honor loved ones and find comfort in community.
In celebration of this milestone year, a permanent butterfly plaque will be installed in the garden to honor the founding volunteers who made this event possible. Visitors will have the opportunity to view this special tribute throughout the Memorial Day weekend and reflect on the legacy of love and community spirit that continues to shape this event.
This event, presented by Friends of Hospice, directly benefits Foothills Compassionate Care, which supports hospice, palliative, and bereavement services for individuals and families across Nevada County. We invite you to join us for the 25th Annual Butterfly Garden of Remembrance, May 24–26, and be part of a legacy that continues to uplift, heal, and inspire.
