Born under the Hollywood sign, Lorraine’s life changed when she met her husband, Rick, at a Halloween party in Los Angeles. The couple soon relocated to Nevada City in 1991 to raise their two children, seeking a peaceful life away from the bustle of Los Angeles.
In 2007, their world shifted dramatically when Rick was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at 62. “What a devastating diagnosis,” Lorraine recalls. “We began an eight-year journey together, trying to make the best of a really ugly situation.” Lorraine was determined to make Rick laugh every day, even as his condition worsened.
As Rick’s disease progressed, Lorraine knew she needed help. Hospice of the Foothills entered their lives, providing essential support during Rick’s final months. “Hospice was there for both of us,” Lorraine says. “They managed Rick’s medications, provided physical and emotional support, and helped me keep going.”
Rick passed away on September 21, 2015, surrounded by his family. Hospice continued to be a lifeline for Lorraine, offering grief support and introducing her to the “Friends of Hospice” group. Lorraine quickly became involved, eventually co-chairing the Celebration of Lives event and, today, serves on the Hospice of the Foothills Board of Directors. “When Rick died, I knew I had to give back to this outstanding non-profit,” she says.
Her gratitude was palpable as Lorraine addressed the audience at 2023 Moonlight Magic. “Life is indeed good,” she smiled. “I’m blessed with the best family and friends anyone could ask for.” Her message was clear: if you find yourself on a similar journey, don’t hesitate to contact Hospice of the Foothills. “The sooner Hospice is contacted, the better it is for everyone involved,” she advised.
She closed with a heartfelt appeal: “Please open your hearts and wallets to support Hospice of the Foothills so they can continue to provide the best possible care for our loved ones.”
With that, Lorraine stepped down, her story told, her heart full.
